In the fall of 2012, Sean Burkholder, former Assistant Professor of Landscape Architecture at Pennsylvania State University instructed a design studio focused on the use of dredge material within the city of Toledo and the larger Maumee Bay. Several of the projects from that studio are highlighted here. This course was aided by:

It is with this studio that the Designing Dredge competition was instigated. Work from the studio should be taken as inspirational and informative, but should in no way be considered prescriptive or exhaustive of the possibilities for the competition.
Products of this studio have been praised both locally and nationally, culminating in one of the projects from the studio produced by Matthew Moffitt winning an ASLA National Excellence Award, the highest design award offered to students of Landscape Architecture at any level.
